“Reggaeton Is NOT Hip-Hop” is in no way, a statement against Reggaeton music. It is in fact, a statement to create and spread awareness that there is a distinct difference between “reggaeton”, and “hip-hop en Espanol” (or “Latin hip-hop” music). It is important so that Latin music supporters everywhere can begin to acknowledge, respect, and appreciate music from BOTH genres, which will broaden the scope of urban Latin music and ultimately, create more opportunities for greater revenue flow, for urban Latin music artists.

“Reggaeton NO ES.. Hip-Hop” en ninguna manera en contra de la música Reggaeton. Simplemente es la realidad en expresión para crear y extender la diferencia distinta entre “Reggaeton”, y “Hip-Hop en Español” (o la música del “Hip-Hop Latino ”). Es importante para que los que soportan la música Latina mundialmente puedan reconocer, respetar y apreciar las dos formas artística de nuestra música. Música que ayudara ampliar la vista de música Latina Urbana. En fin, dará luz a mas oportunidades lucrativas monetariamente para los artistas de música Latina Urbano.

Why is so it important to distinguish “Reggaeton” and “Hip-Hop En Espanol” from one another?

It wasn’t until the 1998 release of Big Pun’s Capital Punishment, that the American music market began to recognize the value of Latino music artists, as his debut album was the first by a solo Latino rapper to go multi-platinum (by American music market standards). His sales proved that there was definitely an audience and most importantly, that they were willing to support urban Latin music artists.

Unfortunately, after Pun, no other urban Latino artist was able to generate relevant interest in the states until 2003, when Tego Calderon released El Abayarde. Following the album’s release, the doors to the U.S. market were wide open for urban Latino music artists and the style of music they were bringing – is “Reggaeton”.

Por Que es importante distinguir “Reggaeton” y “Hip-Hop En Español” uno del otro?

No fue hasta que en el 1998 que salió “Big Pun’s Capital Punishment“, que el mercado Americano comenzó a reconocer el valor de músicos Latinos Urbanos. En este álbum de debuto, Big Pun fue el primer solista Rapero Latino que llego a ser multi-platino había (dentro de los niveles del mercado Americano). Sus ventas demostró que definitivamente había publico que quería escuchar pero mas importante publico que estaban dispuestos a soportar a los músicos Latinos Urbanos.

Desafortunadamente, después de Pun, no ha seguido ningún otro músico Latino Urbano que genera el equivalente de interés en los Estados desde el 2003, cuando Tego Calderon salió con “El Abayarde”. A seguir este lineamento, las puertas del mercado Americano se abrieron en grande para los músicos Latinos Urbanos y el estilo de música que trajeron -- es “Reggaeton”.

Reggaeton is a fusion of tropical rhythms defined by the consistent “Dem Bow” drum pattern, with lyrics centralized in sex and partying, and usually a high-pitched, rapid-fire delivery. It is very close in sound, feel, content and delivery to Dancehall music only it is usually verbalized in the Spanish language. Reggaeton artists such as Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Tego Calderon, and Winsin y Yandel, have continued to make the genre popular here in the states, as well as in Latin countries around the world.

Since the recent reggaeton music explosion, deaf ears have fallen on many of the very talented Latino rappers who have been putting it down in the states alongside their African-American rap music peers since the noted beginning of time of hip-hop music. Artists such as Tony Touch, DJ Charlie Chase, Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, Cypress Hill, The Beatnuts, Fat Joe, and Big Pun (to name a few), have paved the way for urban Latino music artists from all over by delivering their messages in English, Spanish, and “Spanglish” – over “authentic” hip-hop beats.

Reggaeton es una fusión de ritmos tropicales y definidos con la consistencia de “Dem Bow” repeticiones de batería. La letra centralizada al rededor de sexo y fiestas. Usualmente entregado covalent en tono alto, y rapidez de vocal. Es muy parecido en sonido, sentimiento, contento, y entrega a la música conocido como Dance Hall, solo que en el lenguaje de Español. Artistas Reggaetoneros como Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Tego Calderon y Winsin y Yandel a continuado hacer su tipo de música popular en los Estados y en los países Latinos mundialmente.

Desde la reciente explosión de Reggaeton, muchos oídos están sordos a los talentosos Raperos Latinos, que tienen tiempo de estar tirando fuego verbalmente, a la par de sus compañeros Raperos Afro-Americano en los estados. Artistas como Tony Touch, DJ Charlie Chase, Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, Cypress Hill, The Beatnuts, Fat Joe y Big Pun (par nombrar unos), han asaltado el camino para los musicos Latinos Urbano de todo lados, con su entrega vocal en Ingles, Española y Es-Spanglis - sobre los ritmos autentico de Hip-Hop.

Ironically, many well-known and respected urban Latin music artists today – such as Don Dinero, Akwid, Malverde, and NYC’s highly anticipated newcomer L. Negro - remain committed, as the aforementioned, to delivering their messages over traditional hip-hop beats and are being shunned by mainstream Latin media (radio, television, magazines, etc…) because they do not elect to incorporate the reggaeton sound into their songs. This does not provide an equal platform for Latin hip-hop music artists and by the same token, has caused the market to be flooded with a monotonous sound and message.

Irónicamente, muchos artistas conocidos y respetados en la industria de música Latina Urbana - como Don Dinero, Akwid, Malverde y el anticipado Nuevo de NYC - L. Negro - siguen fiel a la entrega de sus mensajes sobre los ritmos tradicionales de Hip-Hop. Y la media (radio, televisión, revistas, etc…) los están echando a un lado por que no incorpora el sonido de Reggaeton a su música. Esto no es una plataforma nivelado para los Artistas de Latino Hip-Hop y por la misma moneda ha causado que el mercado sea inundado con un sonido y mensaje respetuoso.

What has made the American urban music market so successful is its diversity. Hip-hop music can be fused with everything, but what renders it “hip-hop” is an artists delivery, or “flow”… and the ever-changing drum patterns; in hip-hop music, it is beatmaker/composer/producer rule number one, to “make the drums HOT”. The constant evolution of the sound is what has rendered it possible for American hip-hop music to sustain its mark and become the official soundtrack to “pop culture” today.

If we want a greater market value, an even greater platform and further opportunities for Latinos everywhere, we must embrace all aspects of creative expression and not stifle the evolution by enabling an unintentional “monopoly” to pigeonhole urban Latin artists into one category; it limits our power, knowledge, and growth. Remember… there is “reggaeton”, and there is “Latin hip-hop music”, or “hip-hop en Espanol”. Reggaeton is NOT hip-hop.

El mercado musical Urbano ha sido tan exitoso por su diversidad. Hip-Hop puede ser fusilado con todo tipo de sonido pero lo que lo mantiene Hip-Hop es la entrega vocal de su artista, o (flow, como conocido en ingles), el sin fin cambio del ritmo de batería. En Hip-Hop es el creador de ritmos/compositor/productor… regla numero uno “los ritmos de batería tienen que traer fuego”. El constante evolución de sonido es lo que ha hecho posible para que la música de Hip-Hop Americano sostenga su marca y sea oficialmente el sonido de la “cultura pop” de hoy.

Si queremos un valor de mercado máximo, una plataforma mas amplia y mas oportunidades para Latinos mundialmente, tenemos que abrazar todo los aspectos creativos de expresión y no frenar la evolución por medio de sin intención dando oportunidad a la monopolio de sonido. Un monopolio de sonido horcarás a los musicos Latinos Urbanos hacia solo una categoría de música. Nos limita nuestro poder, lecciones y crecimiento. Recuerda hay “Reggae ton” y hay “Hip-Hop Latino” o “Hip-Hop en Español”. Reggaeton NO ES.. Hip-Hop.
